This innovative farm is a cornerstone of The Agroecology Project, where tradition meets innovation to cultivate resilience, food sovereignty, and ecological harmony.
At Tunza, we believe the future of farming lies in blending indigenous knowledge with modern agroecological practices. Our farm serves as a dynamic learning space for farmers, students, researchers, and eco-conscious visitors from across the region and beyond. Here, agriculture is not just about production, it's about regeneration.
What We Grow & How We Grow It
Tunza Fresh Farms has successfully harvested its first organic crop, grown entirely without synthetic inputs. The secret to our success? Mzuri Organic Fertilizer, a powerful, eco-friendly soil enhancer made from vermicompost (nutrient-rich compost produced by earthworms).
This natural fertilizer revitalizes soil health, boosts microbial activity, and increases water retention—key ingredients for thriving crops in a changing climate. Our agroecological methods include:
Crop diversification and intercropping
Composting and organic soil management
Water conservation techniques (mulching, rainwater harvesting)
Natural pest control using companion planting
Seed saving of traditional and climate-resilient varieties
We grow a variety of traditional African crops such as amaranth, spinach, Kales, and indigenous vegetables crops like African nightshade(Managu) that are nutritionally rich, culturally significant, and well-adapted to local conditions.
A Living Lab for Learning & Innovation
Tunza isn’t just a farm, it’s a community-powered learning hub. We host:
Farmer field schools to train smallholders in organic practices
Student internships and research collaborations with universities
Workshops on agroecology, composting, and sustainable livelihoods
Guided eco-tours for schools and visitors interested in regenerative agriculture
By combining ancestral wisdom with science-based solutions, we’re proving that farming can heal the land, nourish communities, and combat climate change—all at once.
🌍 Our Vision
Our mission is to scale this model across Western Kenya and beyond, empowering communities to build self-sustaining, chemical-free food systems. With every harvest, we demonstrate that agroecology is not only possible, it’s profitable, productive, and profoundly transformative.
